Safeway: Can you use an eCoupon & a Manufacturers coupon on the same item?

Have you been wondering if it is ethical to use both an eCoupon & a Manufacturers Coupon on the same item?  Well guess what?  Reader Kelli just sent me this email from Safeway Corporate office.  And from what I am seeing it is.  You will definately want to print this off and keep it in your coupon binder.

Dear Ms.  :
Thank you for your reply regarding the coupon policy.

We appreciate the time you have taken to provide additional feedback on this issue and we can certainly understand your concern. You have requested clarification regarding the combination of coupons that may be used to purchase an item. The coupon policy is as follows:

You may use 1 manufacture coupon, 1 store coupon and your digital coupon(s) or any combination there of, for 1 item. You may not use 2 manufacture or 2 store coupons for one item. If the amounts of your single or combined coupons exceed the amount of the product we will not give you funds back and the store is permitted to decline to accept the coupon.

We apologize for any inconvenience this policy may have caused you. Your comments are important and will be forwarded to our Marketing Department for further review and consideration. Thank you again for taking the time to let us know how we can better serve you.

If you would like to discuss this further, please reply to this email or call our toll free number at 1-877-723-3929 and reference contact I.D. 16806865. One of our associates will be happy to assist you.

We appreciate your business and look forward to seeing you soon. Thank you for shopping at Safeway.

 Sincerely,

 Safeway Customer Service Team

There has been some discussion regarding safeway ecoupons.
Can you stack an ecoupon with a manufactures coupon?
For example if I loaded the $2 off huggies wipes coupon on my
card, can I also use a .50 off Huggies wipes manufactures
coupon? Right now it doesn't beep, the transaction will go
through and take $2.50 off but I was told (not by a Safeway
employee) that that was not allowed.
What is Safeways policy regarding ecoupons combined with
 manufacture's coupons?

Thank you so much Kelli for sending this email!  I have been told this by my store manager, but it is nice to have it in writing from Safeway.

So tell me did you know this?

I read about this on another blog last month about ecoupons. But yours is much more precise so I am going to print it out and keep it with my store cpn policy.

I had more or less stopped using them combined because I felt so guilty getting such good deals.

I had a printable for Nature Valley 'Granola Nut Clusters' and then they had ecoupons for them. Well a time or two I did not use the ecoupons so there were several of the same loaded on my card and I also had the NV granola BARS ones loaded. I bought one bag of clusters and used my printed coupon. (My SW store does not let you use 2 of the same printables per visit...only one....or I would have gotten more. Ugh.)

Well I got home and on the ONE bag (that was on sale too) they took off the dollar printable and then two different dollar off ecoupons for clusters and they also took off the two coupons for the bars... for who knows why. I ended up getting the bag free plus about 2.50 overage. It just does not seem right that that happens but I just load them they day the ecoupons get realeased and then forget about them. I had no idea they would every apply more than one ecoupon per item or one for another item altgether.

Here is the other blog's post on it if you are interested:

Karen- I have struggled with this issue so much too! Even after I was told by the manager I could. It is so nice to see it spelt out and clear that it is okay. Makes me free much better.

Digital Coupons definitely have glitches too because if I buy the NV granola bars the clusters coupon will come off too. Not sure why, but it does and it was a complete accident on my part. Just noticed it one time when I bought them on the last sale.

Thanks for your comment :)

Thanks Amber! And the neat thing is the reference to using store, manufacturer and e-coupon(s). Note the "s"!!
I noticed this worked this week for the Hamburger Helper for example, one from Cellfire and one from Shortcuts, but I wasn't sure if it was supposed to technically work that way. Looks like the answer is Yes. YAY!!!

I don't know if this written email would suffice the way a written coupon policy would, but it's a start!! I once had a reader email me that Kroger (Fred Meyer) told them they could stack an e-coupon with a manufacturer's coupon. Wanting an email of my own for confirmation purposes, I emailed the same customer service center and got an entirely different response! Emails from Customer Service may very much be like speaking to different cashiers or different customer service reps at the store IMHO.

The new policy states on the portion labled coupon stacking lines 23,24 " Safeway does not allow a customer to redeem two or more manufacture coupons against the same item in a single transaction. Coupon stacking policies for manufacture coupns apply to paper and electronic coupns that have been loaded to a club card."
For some reason it said for Hawaii only, my friend called corp. and they said that was incorrect, it applies to all states.

Miss Jay- And thats the problem with Safeway...inconsistency. I was actually going to email them the email and the policy.

I spoke with a manager on the phone with customer service. He said nearly all e-coupons are considered manis and should NOT be stacked with paper manis. (I am currently trying to contact cellfire and shortcut to verify that they consider the e-coupons manis) There are a few store e-coupons you can load from the SW website, which you can stack with paper manis. And of course you can use store coupons with the e-coupon manis. I think that is what the above email was trying to communicate, that you can use a combination of them, however implied but not overtly stated (perhaps because their policy states it) you cannot stack 2 manis nor 2 store coupons. Alas.

I have talked to my manager and he said it is completely okay to do both. I sometimes feel that it all depends on who you talk to, and you would then have to go with the written policy and as for what I see it is okay to do both.

The reader who received this email was very specific about what she was doing they wrote her back saying that she could in fact do it.

I guess I am interpretting their response in this email differently than you guys. I read it that you can use all 3 types, with any combination, as long as you don't combine them in the following "You may not use 2 manufacture or 2 store coupons for one item" Maybe what they mean with that 2nd part is 'you may not use 2 paper manufacture or 3 paper store coupons'. However, this email predates their policy released for June 7th which says not to stack e coupons with manis. I'll need to think about this a little bit more.
